Early Life and Biography
Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu or others. Bennet Omalu was born in September 1968 in Nnokwa, Anambra, Nigeria. He has seven brothers and sisters. Due to the Nigerian civil war, his family had to move to the village of Enugu-Ukwu in south-eastern Nigeria. Two years after his birth, the Omalu family returned to their hometown.
His father was a civil engineer and community leader in Enugu-Ukwu, while his mother was a seamstress. He quickly went to the Enugu Federal Government College to complete his secondary studies. At the age of 16, he attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1990 he obtained an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).

Dr. Bennet Omalu began his career after graduating from university as a clinical intern, followed by three years of work experience in the city of Jos, Nigeria. In 1994, he went to Seattle, Washington, to do an epidemiology fellowship at the University of Washington. The following year, Omalu moved to New York, where he joined the Harlem Hospital Center for a training program in clinical pathology.
After completing his studies, he joined forensic counselor Cyril Wecht at the Allegheny County office in Pittsburgh. While working with Wecht, he was very interested in neuropathology.
Almost in 2007, he was appointed chief medical examiner in San Joaquin County, California. He resigned in 2017 and accused the county sheriff of meddling in death investigations to save police officers who were killing innocent people. His assistant medical examiner also resigned, citing similar reasons.
He is currently a professor in the Department of Medical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California at Davis.
He has almost obtained eight advanced degrees and scholarships in pathology and neuropathology from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the Tepper School of Business, a master’s degree in public health (MPH) in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Public Health and more.
