Leslie Calvin Brown was born on February 17, 1945, in Miami, Florida, United States, in an abandoned building with his twin brother Wesley. Leslie was adopted by a 38-year-old single woman named Mamie Brown, who was a housekeeper and cafeteria worker.

In elementary school, Brown was declared mentally retarded and overcame the illness with the help of his mother and high school teacher. They encouraged him and brought him to his full potential. Brown often mentions this phase of his life in his speeches to motivate his listeners.
