Brief History Of Kampala City – The Largest City In Uganda

Known to be the largest city in Uganda, Kampala is located in the southern part of Uganda and at the Northside of Lake Victoria.

The city of Kampala was built on seven hills, elevated 3,900 feet above sea levels. It has a fantastic climate condition with weather conditions of 28°C in January while it drops later in July to 25°C.
The city experiences its rainy seasons between March till May, while the second phase is experienced in September till November.

  • Kampala Hill – The hill that the city got her name from. Here is the location of the ruins of Lugard’s Fort.
  • Lubaga Hill – The location of Rubaga catholic church and the headquarter of the White priests.
  • Nsambya Hill – Nsambya hospital is located here. Nsambya Hill is also the Mill Hill Mission.
  • Kasubi Hill – Here is the home of Kasubi’s tomb for the dead Kabakas.
  • Menge Hill – Present place of the Kabaka’s Lubri (the king’s palace). It’s also the headquarter of the Buganda Court of Justice.
  • Kibuli Hill – The Kibuli Mosque was built here.
  • Namirembe Hill – Here is the location of the Namirembe Anglican Cathedral.

Kampala area was orally claimed to be the favorite hunting area for Mutesa I, who was once the Kabaka of Buganda. Kampala is hilly and a wetland area that attracts wild animals notably, a particular specie of Antelope, the Impala which the city took her name from.

In Luganda, Kampala, which means ‘The Hills of the Impala’ could be translated to ‘Kasozi ka Impala while those who know about the Kabaka’s hunting stories call the city Kabaka agenze ka’empala, which means’ The Kabaka has gone to Ka’ mpala’.

Before the arrival of the British, Kampala was the capital of the  Buganda Kingdom . It has fertile land for agriculture, among the exporting crops in Kampala, are tobacco, cotton, and coffee.
