Biography

Crayon’s real name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu, but he is also popularly referred to by his stage name, Crayon. He was born on July 8, 2000, in Orile, Iganmu, Lagos State, making him 21 as of 2020. He was born into a family of two children, him and a younger brother, then his parents; all live in Iba in Lagos after leaving Oryol. Crayon is originally from Ebonyi State but grew up mainly with Yoruba speaking people from the Ojo community.

Crayon always has been a music lover since childhood. His father owned a CD rental store where he spends most of his time playing music from his favorite artists like Usher, Zule Zoo, 50 Cent, Wizkid, Fela, Drake, Justin Bieber, Bryson Tiller, and Davido. His mother was a businesswoman.

Crayon was that boy who sang while doing chores or bathing. His parents encouraged him to join his elementary school teenage choir because they knew he had a gift for music.

In 2016 he gave up furthering for higher education after failing JAMB UTME, which he tried four times. He pursued his music career despite the pressure and frustration of not attending a university like his peers. He went through emotional stress for about a year in 2015 until his friend Nos invited him to step up his music career.

Career

Crayon’s musical career could be described as driven by happiness. One day in 2016, the day he decided to record a song in the studio, he met Ozedikus, a music producer who first recognized his potential. He got together with a neighborhood friend, Nosa, and Ozedikus, to record seven songs. Initially, before Charles became Crayon, he used the name “July” because he was born in that month. He visited all the local radio stations with Ozedikus and Nos to distribute his songs. He was delighted when a South African fan recommended one of his first songs, “Orobo Love.”

The end of 2016 marked a turning point in Crayon’s career. From July, he changed his name to Crayon. He met a friend K.O.B., who supported him. K.O.B, who had a relationship with Mavin through a friend, Seun. Seun was fascinated by Crayon’s songs, which he played most of the time loudly, so Baby Fresh spotted Crayon’s talent.
