Biography
Yemi Etieme Solade was born on January 31, 1960, in Surulere Lagos, State – he is 60 years old as of 2020. His mother is from Oron in Akwa Ibom State, and his father is from Egbe in Ogun State.
During his early days in Lagos State, he grew up in Adeniran Ogunsanyi, along Ogunlana Drive. He attended St. John’s Elementary School. Acquilla and went on to Birch Freeman High School for his high school. After an unsuccessful attempt to obtain his A’level certification, he continued his studies at Oyo OSCAS School of Arts and Sciences, preparing for JAMB. He attended Ife University, now Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.), under the supervision of Professor Wole Soyinka.
He graduated in Dramatic Arts from O.A.U. and enrolled at A.B.U. Zaria for a Masters in Public Administration. He holds a degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Leicester and a degree in International Relations from the O.A.U. He completed the National Youth Corps program in Maiduguri, where he taught at Ramat Polytechnic. He then moved to Kaduna Polytechnic, where he taught general studies, communication skills, and literature.
Career
Yemi started performing at the age of 17, during Festac 77, the Festival of Arts and Culture, organized in 1977. As a young Surulere boy, he was a dance champion in Lagos state for three years consecutively and represented Africa in the world dance competitions in Spain. He first appeared on stage during a 45-minute monologue titled “Crazy Youngie,” where he played the role of a passenger and driver.
After Yemi Solade completed his studies, he taught at universities and polytechnics such as Maiduguri University, Ramat Polytechnic, and Kaduna Polytechnic. He moved to Kaduna, where he became Deputy Director of the Kaduna Music and Theater Society, founded by the British Deputy High Commission. Later in 1993, he joined O.A.U., where he was appointed artistic director of the theater company of professor Ola Rotimi.
He directed his first Yoruba film “Oju Inu” (Insight), directed by Wale Adenuga, owner of the PEFTI Institute. His team initially released the film at the Muson Center, but due to financial hurdles, the film failed to take that step.
