The First Black Man To Become Canadian Minister Of Justice, And Attorney General

Among those that stole spots in history an African man, Kaycee Madu, an Igbo man that became the first black man to hold the position of Canada Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Alberta Province.

Kaycee Madu, whose real name is Kelechi Madu, was born in 1973 in Okrika Nweke, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, in Imo State, Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Lagos (Unilag) with a bachelor of law degree (LL. B)

Kaycee, a black immigrant and Canadian politician under the United Conservative Party moved to Canada and his wife, Emem. For her postgraduate studies at the University of Alberta.

According to his law firm’s site, he was believed to have worked under Progressive Conservatives with a job to develop and review laws and policies surrounding minimum wages, for the Provincial government, also Alberta’s temporary foreign worker program, employment standards for firefighters, and youth employment.

In the early 2000s was when the 47-year was called to bar. Having been a lawyer for the past 16 years managing a law firm, Tisel Law Firm, with his wife.
Kaycee once worked for the Legal Aid Alberta and a member of the Parliament representing Edmonton-South, Alberta.

In the 2019 election, Kelechi Madu defeated John Archer of the New Democrat Party with polls of 62 or 64 and became a member of the province’s legislative assembly representing Edmonton-South West after winning the 2019 general election.

On the 4th of March, 2020, was awarded the highest honored award to lawyers who’s influence is visible in the society; the Queen’s Counsel by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

He was made to the Executive Council of Alberta, where he worked as the Minister of Municipal Affairs till his assumption as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General on the 25th of August, 2020.

In a report, Mr. Madu said he gave most of his professional career fighting for those that could not afford legal service.
According to him;

My views on the application of justice and equality will always be integral to who I am as a father, husband, citizen, lawyer, and politician. I am determined to make sure our justice system represents all Albertans in a fair and accountable way. In particular, I believe Modernizing the Police Act will be a necessary step towards ensuring equality for marginalized people before the law, and I look forward to that vital work ahead.

Kaycee Madu and his wife, Emem, have three children, Adanaya, Chisom, and Ugonna.
