The Ethiopia’s Tigray Crisis – Ethiopian Troops Deployed In Mekelle, Tigray To Combat The TPLF

Ethiopian soldiers from the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) were deployed to the capital of Tigray, Mekelle for the final combat fighting off militants troubling the regional government.

According to the prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian armies will be waging war against the militants holding the capital city’s region, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). At the same time, urging the residents of Tigray to choose between the TPLF and the government.

Prime minister Abiy Ahmed who won a Nobel Laureate for peace, through his Twitter account announced on Thursday that the 72-hours ultimatum given to the TPLF drop arms and surrender to the government has passed. He added that the law enforcement agency had reached its final stage. He also assured the citizens that whatever casualties will be avoided. According to the statement, thousands of members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front surrendered within the 72-hours ultimatum.

Tigray – a hilly and dried region. It was named after the Tigrayans whose language is Tigrinya and are the fourth largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. Not minding how small the community is, the TPLF had continually caused havoc in the country more than any other political organization.
The militants; the Tigray’s People’s Liberation Front was the political organization that led a coalition of militias and organization that overthrew the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1991 and was the same organization due to their partnership with the government installed a prime minister in the late Meles Zenawi.

In the fight to control the Northern Tigray region, the communication network of the Ethiopian soldiers was jammed by the TPLF.

In 2019, Abiy Ahmed’s Progress Party had a misunderstanding with TPLF before they left the coalition. Some days ago, the Ethiopian soldiers clashed with the Tigray regional force at the Aksum airport in which the opposition disabled the runaway and kept the airport under their control until Ethiopian National Defense Force reclaimed it back on November 11.

According to the TPLF leader, Mr Debretsion Gebremichael who announced to the news outlet on November 19 that Aksum was under their control and there is a serious fight going on, but the Ethiopian government refuted on the 20th that the town had been recaptured, but the opposition vandalized the infrastructures.
