The Council for International Education in African Fashion (CIAFE) is an organization dedicated to improving the standards of fashion education to make it accessible to all in hopes of creating employment opportunities, launched in July 2021.
FashionUnited spoke with CIAFE Executive Director Frederica Brooksworth about the development of digital fashion and sustainability in African fashion education and what the future of the industry as a whole looks like.
How will sustainable fashion grow in the African fashion education industry?
To be honest, I think the African fashion education industry has the power to come together and talk about sustainable fashion. I mean, when you look at sustainability, people in Africa live sustainably almost all of their lives. The concept of the pre-order model is not something new to people on earth or in the diaspora. The way people wash, mend and recycle their clothes is a lifestyle, not a fad. It’s also interesting to know how the clothes are made and how the fabrics are used, and there’s a lot more to discuss.
Will digital fashion become an important factor in the future of the African fashion industry? If yes/no, why?
We can already see that digital fashion is integrating into the industry. There has been a huge increase in the number of digital designers, 3D digital fashion shows, new e-commerce platforms recently, and now we are talking about NFT and the metaverse. It’s inevitable, so it’s something African fashion leaders are getting behind.
How will education establishments change in the time ahead, and what new opportunities will be offered?
The change you produce is to create more modern programs and to teach students exactly how to study. We have many design programs, as well as additional development programs. This leads to employment opportunities in different sectors, we are close to international organizations which are equal in Africa to participate in the broadening of the industry.
What is the future of the African fashion education industry as a whole?
Future is passionate African as now I see changes, the industry as a whole has been embraced by the international industry and will soon receive the same attention in terms of funding, awards, media coverage, and students international. field study. Like more research, the possibilities for publication are endless!
