In 2016, A Black Doctor Removed a Baby, Operated on Her, and Then Safely Returned Her to Her Mother’s Womb

In 2016, Dr. Oluyinka O. Olutoye (who is from Nigeria) made history after he successfully co-led a team of 21 doctors to perform a very unusual surgery on a 23-week old baby at a Texas hospital. During the surgery, he removed the fetus from the mother’s womb, operated to remove a large tumor that was growing on the fetus’ tailbone, and then returned the fetus back to the mother’s womb unharmed.

When the mother gave birth after 9 months, the baby was born normal and healthy.

The operation gave Dr. Olutoye a stellar reputation that has validated him as a world-renowned pediatric and fetal surgeon with specialized clinical expertise in fetal and neonatal surgery. He is currently the appointed Surgeon-In-Chief at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, leading one of the largest children’s hospital surgery departments in the world.

Richard J. Brilli, MD, the chief medical officer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, said that the appointment of Dr. Olutoye was a no-brainer given his record and experience. In fact, the hospital is using Dr. Olutoye to officially establish a preeminent fetal surgery program.

Dr. Olutoye received his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, and earned his PhD in anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Virginia Commonwealth University, and his fellowships in pediatric and fetal surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA.

He is a member of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society and is a Fellow of the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons.
