Seven ways Nigerian celebrities can make fashion statements without wearing outlandish outfits

You can always get our attention with beautiful combinations of clothes.

why be eccentric when you can look beautiful? AMVCA made it clear to us that celebrities prefer exaggerated outfits to fashionable styling that really works and looks impeccable.

When it comes to fashion, always pursuing shock value is not the only means of self-expression.

A common culprit is Toyin Lawani (Tiannah Styling): She and her clients failed on the AMVCA (African Magic Viewers Choice Awards) red carpet because their clothes were over the top and impractical.

Once you’ve seen that high-end clothes don’t always work, how can celebrities slay every red carpet appearance?

1. Focus on aesthetics

Aesthetics are important. And this is essentially about how beauty is perceived. It also means the principles by which things are done.

The point of aesthetics is that your overall appearance should look good to everyone who sees it.

Unless it’s Halloween or a costume party, the 20 skulls on your dress make it look like you’re preparing for a bloody ritual and there’s no reason you should be wearing it.

Compare this look to Nancy Isima: the “Blood Sisters” star simply covered her body in Cowries.

These two looks show the importance of aesthetics: one is perceived as beautiful and the other as weird.

2. Focus on the theme

Each event has a basic theme or dress code. There are smart casual, business casual, casual, brunch casual, evening wear and other themes.

The theme of the event you are attending should influence how you dress and what you wear.

The theme for the AMVCA was evening wear, so dress as glamorous as going out to dinner with the Queen of England.

Would you wrap yourself in duct tape if you dined with the royal family? I guess not? So why do it at AMVCA?

3. Stick to your personal style

Just be honest with yourself. This saying also applies to fashion.

On the red carpet, we can distinguish between those who know each other and those who seek attention and noise.

Denola Gray and Denrele Edun are two people with a strong sense of personal style. Denrele has been dressing eccentrically since we’ve known him, so when we see him on the red carpet, we’re not surprised: that’s his style, and sometimes it works.

Denola, on the other hand, is always confident and self assured, you know he’s not experimenting, he knows what to wear, what designers to call, what looks good on him, and what color to choose.

what is said is basically knowing who you are and let your style be original.

4. Dress according to your body

That a style makes sense in your head, doesn’t mean it will look good on you.

Yes, Osas Ighodaro a great body, but that’s just one step to kill the look. You need to make sure that whatever you are wearing fits you.

You don’t want to be another Mobimpe Adedimeji who looked like an overblown flower because the dress did not fit her body type.

5. Color and Fitting are important

Not all colors are good for everyone. So before you wear those green, red, or pink clothes, think about skin color, shoes, and makeup. Since we know that the colors can be tricky, how about you choose more neutral colours?

Some designers are tacky, their performance is poor. what ruined Pretty Mike of Lagos’ outfit is its tawdry, like a low budget look.

Celebrities don’t want to be able to search for a designer who finishes their clothes to perfection and understands the importance of details.

6. Be Creative

One of AMVCA’s best outfits so far has to be Nana Akua Addo’s in 2020. That year, she wore a Gaurav Gupta dress that fit her shape so perfectly and had such movement and fluidity to it. It was unlike the other dresses we saw that night and it made a lot of sense.

Creativity doesn’t have to be boring, quirky, or outrageous, it can also be beautiful.

7. Focus on functionality

Why are you wearing a cloth you cannot breathe in or go to the restroom when you want to?

The man who wrapped himself with caution tape would not be able to urinate all through that night – that hardly makes sense.

Simi Drey wore a mask, it is possible she was not able to see or breathe well with it. Also, Nigeria is in the tropics, she will be sweating gallons. What’s the point?

As much as fashion is a means of self-expression, it must be attractive.
